Read the list of ingredients
This is probably the most important step. There are a number of companies which include the giants that are violating the FDA's regulations by not listing their product's ingredients. Each and every company is required to list all the ingredients in their product. If you see things like pigment, frost, or shimmer mentioned in the ingredients then it's not FDA approved. You can visit the FDA's website to find a complete list of approved ingredients.
Ingredients for mineral eye shadows
Since eye shadows makeup the majority of mineral makeup sales the thing you should look at here is the inclusion of magnesium myristate, zinc oxide, zinc stearatae, carnauba coated mica, silica and kaolin clay. All of these ingredients are important because they help a good eye shadow to last longer and make them very easy to apply and also blend. However, if there is too much kaolin clay it can make the eye shadow difficult to blend and the colors will be dull not to mention create a mess when it becomes hot.
The other ingredient you need to look at is carnauba also commonly referred to as copernicia cerifera. This is a favorite ingredient in eye shadows. This makes the eye shadow creamier with good blending and pigmentation.
SPF claims
When searching for the best mineral makeup you will often come across claims of this makeup having SPF qualities. However, you need to pay special attention as to how these SPF claims are worded. If it says on the packaging that this product offers SPF protection then you need to be leery. If it says on the packaging that the product includes zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which protect your skin from the sun but because it has not been tested they cannot include a specific SPF level then that sounds fine. That said there are some companies (usually the very large ones) who have invested money in investigating exactly what level of SPF their mineral makeup offers. They will often have an SPF rating on the packaging.
